Furzey Gardens

RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012 Furzey Gardens designed by Chris Beardshaw

Chris Beardshaw returns to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2012 after a five year absence, with a design celebrating the 90th anniversary of Furzey Gardens in Hampshire.

Hoping to buck recent trends in show garden planting, Chris’s sloping woodland garden will incorporate ericaceous plants and shrubs to spectacular effect, with acid-loving species such as rhododendrons, azaleas and primulas.

A major feature will be a bespoke reclaimed timber and thatch structure created for RHS Chelsea by Master Thatcher, Simon Sinkinson who has worked with Furzey Gardens for the past 30 years.

Designed as a meeting place, the structure will include a tiny fairy door, the likes of which are enchanting favourites with children at Furzey Gardens.

To create the garden, Chris Beardshaw will work with students at the Minstead Training Project, the sister charity to Furzey Gardens Charitable Trust which provides services for adults with learning difficulties.

Students will influence the design, grow plants and assist with the physical build. It will be the first time students with learning difficulties have been represented and involved directly with a Show Garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.
