By London garden designer Charlotte Rowe. This large mature garden West London garden was in need of a complete overhaul so that it would fit better with the new owners' lifestyle and tastes.

To bring it up to date, an old rockery and a range of overgrown
trees and shrubs were removed and in their place a grassed
amphitheatre was constructed to provide a central point for this
large family garden - this is now used as a seating area for the
teenagers in the family and a play area by the couple's young
daughter. At night the rim of box balls (Buxus sempervirens) are
cross-lit to great effect.

The three terraced areas around the L-shaped fish pond are laid
with pale cream limestone and this stone is also continued as
detailing in the new lawn; contemporary furniture and containers
complete the clean uncluttered look.

The planting is mainly new style perennial planting in a palette
of pale umber, lavender and grey green using structural plants such
as Melianthus major, Rosmarinus
officinalis, Beschorneria yuccoides,
Lavendula
angustifolia 'Hidcote' and herbs such as Thymus and Salvia officinalis to break up the
waves of perennials including Achillea 'Walter Funcke', Knautia macedonica, Verbena bonariensis, Foeniculum vulgare
purpureum and Sedum telephium 'Matrona' mixed with the late
flowering deciduous grass, Panicum virgatum 'Heavy Metal'.
