High summer

By Andrew Fisher Tomlin. Its high summer - what needs to be done in the garden?

The shows are over and it's getting hot so sit back and relax. These are some of the jobs you need to think about.

  • Keep deadheading plants that need this to generate more flowers such as roses.
  • Its best to hold off planting now until the autumn when you can be sure that plants will have good moist conditions. But if you are going away get someone in to cover the watering for you.
  • Watering will be essential - conserve valuable water supplies by getting a water butt to store rainwater and if we get a hosepipe ban well start using the bath water.
  • Hardy annuals and biennials should be doing well now. Remember to feed and water.
  • Keep mowing the lawn but hold off on the feeding now.
  • Keep an eye on ponds and fish, making sure water levels don't drop and keep pondweed down.
