Jobs for late summer

By Andrew Fisher Tomlin. The clean up starts now! My garden is starting to get a bit out of control by now so its time to do some tidying of the borders and plan a little for winter and spring colour.

  • Order bulbs in time for Autumn planting. Keep a look out for them in your garden centres and think about planting early summer bulbs such as Alliums - these will look great next year at a fraction of ready grown prices.
  • Keep dead-heading roses for continued flowers and cut back hardy geraniums to encourage a second, smaller flush of late flowers.
  • In the fruit garden pick late fruiting varieties and start pruning back other varieties. There are different opinions on pruning but I prune fruit trees when still in leaf to discourage silverleaf.
  • Cover ponds with netting to catch the first leaf fall.
  • Carry on cutting lawns and prepare for autumn lawncare such as aeration and top dressing.

But don't forget to sit back and enjoy the last few days of sunshine!

What Shoot members say...

"I love Shoot. It makes me feel like I am gardening as part of a community instead of in isolation. When I have a problem, people are quick to help and when I see a wonderful new bloom in my garden I can't wait to show it off in my garden diary."
