Romantic seaside rose-garden
By Tallinn based garden designer Merilen Mentaal. This is an artist's garden who adores roses, especially the English roses.
Seaside location (in Haapsalu, Western-Estonia) makes the garden quite windy, whereas sea seems to give an extra vigor to it.
The goal of the garden was to be truly romantic, soft and feminine, to inspire and to excite all five senses, also welcoming the wildlife.
90% of the plants in the garden are roses, with a little help of perennials, few existing fruit trees and shrubs.
Rose beds were designed in shapes of waves, imitating the bay area, separated by narrow gravel paths, edged by Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote'. The main path in the garden is of local yellow limestone, laid on compacted sand-bed.
The colours of roses throughout the garden change from white and cream, to light warm pink, to pink-purple-red, then into warm yellows and oranges.
The favourites are Rosa 'Crown Princess Margareta', 'Evelyn' and 'Jubilee Celebration'. Main supporting perennials are Achillea 'Lachsschönheit', Alchemilla mollis and Nepeta faassenii 'Walker's Low'.
