Shrubs and plants for east facing bed under tree

Comment from Mrs J Selig

Triangular east facing bed under silver birch tree, buildings to south and west, very little, if any sunlight. Skimmia hanging in there, also oak hydranger and 2 hellibores. Should we just give up and pave the area?

How to Train a Chaenomeles speciosa 'Geisha Girl?

Question from Sue Owens

hello, I'm fairly new to gardening and I've recently bought a Chaenomeles speciosa 'Geisha Girl which I would like to train to grow onto a wall (fan shape). I've planted it about 40 cm from the wall, fixed some horizontal wires across the wall behind it and now I don't know what to do next.

The plant is just over the height of the first wire (30 cm). Do I wait until next year before I start fixing it to the wires? When and how do I prune it?

I'd really appreciate your advice. Thank you.

Setting up a 'tropical' urban balcony garden

Question from briony campbell

Hello, I'd love some advice on planting tropical plants on my London balcony. It's unusually big at 10m x 3m, but East facing so only has sun until midday. I excitedly bought a lot of plants that I love, but are really suited to warmer climes (though I have seen growing in London happily). I wanted climbers to cover the brick walls, so bought Bouganvillia, Passion Flower, and Solanum. So now I'm wondering if I'm being over optimistic, or whether with the right care these plants will succeed. I also have bananna plants which I've grown well indoors and wondering about planting them outside. And a new fig tree. If anyone has the experience to tell me how best to pot them and where, ie which of them need the sunniest spot or sheltered spot I'd be so grateful for any help. Thanks in advance! Briony

Hydrangea Help!

Question from Beth

Hi, I'm a complete garden novice! My hydrangea which has been quite happy and flowered well for the last 10 years has this year got many less flowers, on closer inspection there are white deposits mainly on the undersides of the leaves and a few on the branches, they look like marshmallows - and of the same sticky consistency! Any ideas of what this is and what to do? Also, when should I cut out the dead wood? Thanks for any help.

Acer

Question from Clare

I planted my Acer two years ago and I've now noticed it's bending over quite dramatically about five inches above where the support finishes so it's now not getting anymore height. Is this normal and if not how do I stop it from doing it.

Planting bulbs

Question from Julie

I have lots of daffodil bulbs in storage that I dug up from the garden last year when clearing some borders. I'm now planting up some new borders and wondered if it's OK to plant the bulbs now whilst it's easy to access between perennials, or whether I should wait until the usual bulb planting time in the Autumn?
