Grafting a wisteria

Question from Gill

Hi everyone

I want to have a go at grafting a wisteria onto a rootstock. Do you do this to promote earlier flowering? Do you use wisteria sinensis seedlings or can you take a cutting from wisteria sinensis and grow it on and then use it? I want to have a go at training a wisteria into a 5 or 6ft standard. I've only grafted apple trees before so this is really new to me but I thought it would be exciting if I could get it to work. Also, could I just take a cutting from my wisteria sinensis growing on my back wall and train that as a standard (if I can get it to root)?

Thanks

Gill

is Verbena hastata 'Rosea' a late emerger?

Question from Paul Kemp

Hi everyone,

I planted a number of new perennials last autumn, one of which is Verbena hastata 'Rosea'. Unlike all the other perennials, it still shows no sign of life after the winter. I would be surprised if the frost had killed it off as it is interspersed with Agastache 'Black Adder' which is apparently less hardy and that is doing fine. Has anyone experienced anything similar with this plant?

Thanks,

Paul

Sporobolus heterolepis - availability

Question from Barry Tabor

Greetings one and all.
I saw this delightful grass on TV but have not yet found a supplier in the UK. I have, however, sourced 5 x half ounce packets of seed from 'another place.' If anybody would like one of the packets, please contact me if you can (this site does not appear to encourage contact between members, or even to facilitate it, so I do not know how you will contact me .....) Anyway, I should have the seed within about a month if anybody wants some.

Lobelia x gerardii - hardiness

Comment from Barry Tabor

Greetings, All!
I bought seed of Lobelia x gerardii from a well known supplier and had great success with both germination and growing to planting size. It was described as a 'Hardy Perennial' by the supplier, but I have since seen it described as 'frost tender' and would like advice from anybody growing it north of Cambridge as to whether it can be expected to survive 'normal' winters in Cambs/Norfolk, please. Maybe I should put a few in pots in an unheated greenhouse? What does anyone think?
Thanks
Barry

Winter Flowering Wallflowers

Comment from Allan Creek

Hello, Last autumn I bought some wallflowers. Shortly after planting them one - a yellow one - started flowering it has flowered all through the snow and frost and it is still flowering. Have I got a winter flowering wallflower. Can it be developed?

Can anyone suggest a low growing evergreen to frame front door steps?

Question from Marie

Hello,

We have a fairly grand front door on a classic Georgian house. Currently planted on both sides of the step to the door are old heathers that from close up have become very messy and open. One is invaded by wild strawberry.

I'd like to replace the heathers and relocate the strawberry and plant with something more healthy looking. Can anyone suggest an evergreen plant that would suit in a fairly formal but not too prissy way? The soil is loamy and it faces North East.

Many thanks!

Marie
