Raspberries

Comment from Joanne 9919

I am having a go at raspberries for the first time this year.

I have got Autumn Bliss. I planted them up and then I've pruned them down to the ground. Was this the right thing to do?

Thanks,
Jo.

Raised Beds

Comment from Joanne 9919

Has anyone used Link-a-Board for raised beds?

I currently have my name down for an allotment and am researching what I will build my raised beds from. Link-a-Board looks like a good idea, but wondered if anyone has any experience with it.

Rats

Question from Wendy

A few years ago, we had problems with rats coming into the garden eating the bird food and visiting the compost heap. We called the council rat man in and he put down poison which had a quick effect. However, when looking round the compost bins, he asked if I put green vegetable waste on it i.e., cabbage leaves, brocolli etc. Apparently they can act as an antidote to the rat poison. Has anyone else heard this?

Have you started any seeds off yet?

Comment from Joanne 9919

Just wondering when everyone starts off their seeds?

I have sown some sweet pepper and aubergine seeds already, mainly because these need a long growing season.

I will be sowing the majority of my seeds in March when the weather has warmed up a little.

Potatoes.

Question from Lorna Hazeltine

Hi everyone. I have bought 2.1/2kg of Maris Bard seed potatoes. I have put them in a tray in a cool light place to chit.(In dining room which I only use when I have visitors so the heat is only on very low).I would like to grow them in "flower" buckets. Do I just put 1 seed potato in each bucket? Oh, and how long does chitting process take? Can't you just tell I am an OAP with very little gardening knowledge, just ask Georgie!! Thanks for any help you can give.

Natural World - A Farm for the Future

General post from Nicola

I was sent this link to a BBC program about the future of farming. It is interesting and worth a look if you have a spare 30 mins one day.

BBC Natural World - A Farm For The Future

An experienced gardener can produce 5 times more food than a farm per sq m. and we may be forced to look at this type of crop production in the future.

Watercress in containers

Tip from Georgie

On another thread, Laura was asking me to say more about how I grow Watercress in pots. So here goes.

Believe me, it couldn't be simpler. I use a 30cm pot filled with multi purpose compost. I sow the seeds direct in spring and have found I get good germination rates. (Seed was from Thompson and Morgan.) I let four seedlings develop and before long they are trailing over the pot edges to the ground.

The pot stands in a 5cm deep saucer of water which I top up every few days and I pick the the crop regularly. Here in London I've found it to be quite hardy producing new leaves well into late autumn/early winter. Here's a photo.

Potatoes

Question from Wendy

Hi, I want to grow potatoes this year. As the tubers are normally sold in packs of 20, could I start chitting say five of the tubers and keep the other 15 to plant successionally four weeks apart? How long will the tubers keep before going off? I would like to try growing new potatoes as well as general purpose ones. Also, will all potatoes grow happily in potato sacks or even an old plastic bin? Many thanks.
