The brilliant blue flowers are arranged in leafy whorls further up the stems and are pollinated by long-tongued bees. Meadow clary is a rare plant of overgrown grassy verges and banks on lime-rich soils. Its name comes from 'clear-eye', and an infusion was traditionally used as an eye-wash, particularly in the days when smoke from indoor fires made the eyes smart.
