This is a plant of disturbed ground and crop fields that have not been treated with weedkiller, hence its carpeting of battlefields during and after the First World War. Common poppy has no nectar but the flowers provide pollen for bees. Beetles feed in the seed capsules and some species may overwinter here when the capsules are empty: a good reason for leaving them when the flowers are over.
