The dog-rose produces conspicuous scarlet hips in autumn, sometimes known as dragon's eyes. These are edible and high in vitamin C, and they are often used to make syrup, jellies and other preserves as well as in the treatment of bladder and kidney disorders. They are eaten by birds and small mammals such as bank voles.
