Re: Plants for wall crevices

from Pam B

Wow Katy, thanks. There's lots to go on and maybe it's too late in the season to do anything now but certainly for another year I'll get going and hopefully post a photo when something takes off.
Thanks again,
Pam

Plants for wall crevices

from Pam B

I have perimeter walls in stone cladding with some small cracks between the stone where I'd love to have trailing plants inserted. I live in Sicily and see the caper plant everywhere growing spontaneously from cracks in the stone walls but no-one can tell me how to start it off - it just seems to lodge there on it's own and gets going..!!

There is also a plant similar to a wild wallflower which does the same - again no-one can help.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

DIY Water Feature

from Pam B

Hi Katy, thanks for replying with your advice. Sounds more complicated for my handyman than I envisaged!

No problem sourcing the items locally (maybe the pump over the net though).

Found a site last night that gives a good choice and I may just opt for one I saw on it. Anyway, sooner or later, I'll try and post a pic of the feature when installed!

Thanks again.

Water Fountains

from Pam B

I have a small corner in my pocket-sized 'garden' where I'd love to have a small water fountain.

I'm not very impressed with the few I've been able to find on the internet - not a great choice and rather repetitive.

Does any member have any suggestions of where to look or how to make my own (please small!) as I have a very good handyman who'd surely do it for me.

(Since I live in Sicily please don't suggest shops - just the items I would need.)

Thanks.

Mediterranean garden

from Pam B

Hi! I live in eastern Sicily and have tried propagating a Hibiscus Arnottianus without much success. I took the shoots in mid February but believe the correct moment is mid March to begining April.

Any advice is welcome - thanks.

Princes Rainforest Project

from Pam B

On the same subject, may I bring to your attention an excellent way of helping the rainforests at no cost to ourselves.

The Rainforest Site http://www.therainforestsite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=4&ThirdPartyClicks=ERR_112409_TRS
has a 'click to give' which is sponsored by many kind companies. Clicking daily on this site will help to protect so many acres of rainforest. The site also includes other excellent causes for which you can 'click to give'. Please pass the word around your friends and family.

Eliminating a tree stump

from Pam B

In 2005 I had to give the chop to an apricot tree which had been planted in a very limited space and was growing too high giving problems to the owner-occupiers of the condo where I live.

I have noticed since last year that a strange white fungus is now appering where the stump is still embedded in the soil.

I believe this is nature's way of slowly 'eating' up the stump, but I'd like to know if it's dangerous for the plants that I've planted near this dying stump. Also is there any way of hurrying up the process?

Thanks.

Overseas Gardeners

from Pam B

I thoroughly agree with Laura in Care Calendar, it's a fantastic site and so helpful.
May I suggest you open a forum topic for those of us who live overseas - perhaps even splitting it up into distinct geologicall areas (I live in the Med for example) with an expert around to give us help & advice for our particular region etc. this would complete an already excellent service that you offer.
Thanks and keep up the good work!

Limoncello

from Pam B

This photo and others that may appear show the 'garden' last June.
(My first year of gardening!) Since then the bottlebrush by the white wall is really tall now and bursting into flower and the hibiscus are also tall.
The petunias & gazanias of last year have been exchanged for a variety of summer flowers which are busy shooting up!
