Jan Helle, My Garden (SW17)

Styles: Courtyards and small terraces, English cottage, Suburban, Water, Wildlife

Soil types: Loamy

Soil drainage: Moist but well-drained

Light: Full Shade, Full Sun, Partial Shade

Aspect: South, East

Exposure: Sheltered

Hardiness: Hardy (H4)

This is a garden with no straight lines. There is a small (everything needs to be small!) patio outside the French windows for the morning sun, and then a step up into the garden onto a path bending towards the left over a small stream and then up two steps onto the terrace which is partially covered by an arch of roses and clematis where there is a built in barbeque. To the right of the terrace is a gentle waterfall with a small pond at its bottom and a stream off that which dissects the path, leading to another pond. To the right of the waterfall is a small rock garden opening up into a bigger bed that stretches down to the patio. On the other side is anther bed from the terrace to the pond with a little triangular bed the other side. A 2nd path from the main path leads to his shed, my shed/greenhouse is to the left of the patio. The garden is crammed full of lovely plants.

About me
After years of terraces and patios in central London, I finally have a 9x6 metre suburban garden with a terrace, patio, a shed/greenhouse for me, a shed for him, a waterfall, a little stream and 2 ponds and loads of plants some inherited, some donated, some bought and lots grown from seed. It is my delight/escape and it has saved my life. I am lucky that my husband is extremely practical and has built the terrace and patio and constructed the waterworks so it has been a shared endeavour. He also redesigned the flat so that we can see the garden and all the seasons.

Gardening expertise
Very Keen

Biggest gardening accomplishments
Creating a garden from scratch as when we moved in the whole of the middle of the garden was fenced in as a dog run. Discovering the joy of growing from seed.

Biggest gardening frustrations
The sycamore trees that are at the bottom of the garden in the garden which backs on to ours and next door. Slugs and snails That the garden isn't bigger!

The gardening project I am currently working on
I want to rework the beds and have grown a lot of plants from seeds which I now need to work out a plant design for them.
