Karen (My other hobby is sewing!), Pooh Corner (NR12)

Styles: Rural, Water, Wildlife

Soil types: Clay

Soil drainage: Moist but well-drained

Soil pH: Acid

Light: Full Shade, Full Sun, Partial Shade

Aspect: North, South, East, West

Exposure: Sheltered

Hardiness: Indoor unheated (H2), Hardy (H4)

The cottage sits in the middle of it's plot in the corner of a set-aside field with woods on 2 sides. We are completely enclosed to keep our 2 dogs in and the garden is divided into 5 areas as you move round the property. We have a large pond holding carp and this is closed off from the main garden because of the dogs (the pond garden). The rest is paved (the summerhouse garden) gravelled (the pergola garden) or grassed (the lawn garden). Behind the summerhouse is the shady garden, with very little sun, enclosed by iron railings. The acid soil means we have good azaleas and rhododendrons. The pond and woods means lots of wildlife - toads, frogs, newts, dragonflies, wren, thrush, woodpeckers and even a kingfisher. The woods limit our sunshine from about 10.00 to 4.00 in summer, less as the sun gets lower so plants with a 'full sun' requirement can be a problem.
