Kate Spriggs, Our NGS project (DN33)
Styles: English cottage, Exotic, Oriental, Suburban, Wildlife
Soil types: Clay, Loamy
Soil drainage: Moist but well-drained
Soil pH: Neutral
Light: Full Sun, Partial Shade
Aspect: South, West
Hardiness: Hardy (H4)Moved here 15 years ago to lawn, narrow straight borders and roses everywhere. We have played about with it for years and never been completely happy, so we have decided to revamp the whole area using the lawn as a pathway with deep curved borders with brick path through. Structures such as an Urn, Arch and seating will add to the all year round view. Two patio areas making the most of the sun in the morning and late evening. Woodland area in the shaded part of the garden leading to the WW2 concrete air raid shelter which we have kept as a feature. The area that receives the sun is to be planted with grasses, perennials, cottage garden plants and evergreens for structure and winter interest . Our ultimate aim is to open for the National Garden Scheme although that may be some years away.

Plants in Kate Spriggs's garden
Interested in gardening for a few years but recently became involved in flower arranging which lead me to look at what we grow in our garden that I can use. This has now blossomed into a project where we want to show the garden under the NGS program as well as giving me enough foliage for my flower arranging displays. My husband has been a great help in growing most of the every day plants from seed so saving a fortune, leaving us to spend our money on the strucutural plants.
Biggest gardening accomplishments
Taking the plunge and completely re-designing the garden. Finding that my husband has very green fingers and can grow anything from seed, enabling us to save a fortune on plants.
Biggest gardening frustrations
Getting planting to flow from one area to another.
The gardening project I am currently working on
To split the garden up into areas, Japanese & Mediterranean patio area's, Woodland & Cottage Garden borders with seating.
