Belinda Macdonald, Shades of Green, Romantic, plant-filled, suburban garden (FK10)
Soil types: Loamy
Soil drainage: Moist but well-drained
Soil pH: Neutral
Light: Full Sun, Partial Shade
Hardiness: Hardy (H4)Suburban back garden on two levels with existing curved retaining wall, patio and raised lawn area. The children no longer used the upper lawn area and the client was keen to indulge her dream of a romantic, plant-filled, cottage style garden. Due to the restricted budget, the upper garden area was tackled first. All the turf was removed and a meandering path of purple slate chips was created through the garden, dividing it into two areas. The rear area was planted with a mixture of shrubs, small tree, herbaceous perennials and bulbs to create a traditional cottage style garden. The area closest to the patio was planted with ornamental grasses, herbaceous perennials and summer bulbs to create a wilder, more naturalistic area which will reach its full splendour in late summer. Space was left in this area for annuals, to allow the planting to vary from year to year.

Belinda Macdonald, Shades of Green
I am a professional garden designer, running Shades of Green Garden Design based in Dollar, Clackmannanshire. I help clients to create the ideal garden for their lifestyle, location & budget. I often work alongside my clients in the new garden during the planting phase, chatting with them about why the plants have been selected and what needs to be done to encourage healthy, vigorous growth over the ensuing seasons.Every garden that I design is different, as each one reflects the aspirations, preferences and needs of the client. As result, my working life is one of constant stimulation and challenge, as I seek the best solutions to the problems posed by each garden I am involved with. It's a very satisfying way to spend one's days! Some of my clients' gardens are listed in the Members Gardens section - search for Belinda Macdonald.
