Belinda Macdonald, Shades of Green, Traditional Garden with Differing Levels (FK15)

Styles: Suburban

Soil types: Loamy

Soil drainage: Well-drained

Soil pH: Neutral

Light: Full Shade, Full Sun, Partial Shade

Aspect: North, South, East, West

Exposure: Sheltered

Hardiness: Hardy (H4)

The garden surrounds the house on all sides and although some work has been done in the past (natural stone retaining walls at the rear of the house) lumpy, bumpy lawn and an area of mature trees were the predominant features on my first visit. The garden has now been levelled, and more stone retaining walls installed, to create a flowing space around the house with a new outdoor dining area and a sunny 'sitooterie' in the upper garden. Planting is a traditional mix of well-behaved shrubs and herbaceous perennials, as the client requested, which will provide changing interest as the seasons progress. The garden is being developed in two phases, with phase two taking place after an extension has been completed.

About me
I am a professional garden designer, running Shades of Green Garden Design based in Dollar, Clackmannanshire. I help clients to create the ideal garden for their lifestyle, location & budget. I often work alongside my clients in the new garden during the planting phase, chatting with them about why the plants have been selected and what needs to be done to encourage healthy, vigorous growth over the ensuing seasons.Every garden that I design is different, as each one reflects the aspirations, preferences and needs of the client. As result, my working life is one of constant stimulation and challenge, as I seek the best solutions to the problems posed by each garden I am involved with. It's a very satisfying way to spend one's days! Some of my clients' gardens are listed in the Members Gardens section - search for Belinda Macdonald.
