Cotoneaster - sudden death

Question from Marie

After an autumn/winter well laden with berries and a spring which saw masses of little white flowers, my Cotoneaster conspicuus 'Decorus' has suddenly appeared to die. It doesn't seem to be beset with bugs of any type (apart from spiders) but does appear to have lichen growth over many branches. Does anyone have any idea what would cause such a sudden demise in what seemed to be a healthy plant?
