Symptoms

White-winged flies 1-2mm long can be seen on the underside of leaves in mid-summer. The overwintering flies in pupal stage appear as raised, oval, black objects encrusted with a white wax substance.

Spot them

They are 1mm long and can be seen on the lower leaf surface. The yellow-green scale-like nymphs suck sap from the leaves in mid-late summer.
