Polystichum aculeatum

Comment from Miriam Mesa-Villalba

The hard shield-fern is an attractive foliage plant for a shaded border or rockery. Few invertebrates are closely associated with ferns. Ladybirds may shelter in the dead fronds.

What Shoot members say...

"I can't praise you all enough for your wonderful website. I signed up last week and have used it non-stop since. As a very rusty beginner gardener, I find it invaluable, extensive, extremely easy to navigate and not overwhelming. My only slight worry is that the increasing list of 'plants I want' is jeopardising all my spending plans for the spring. This could be the year that the garden has priority over the house!"
