Ranunculus acris

Comment from Miriam Mesa-Villalba

It gets its name from the bright yellow saucer-shaped flowers, and is a traditional childhood 'test' of whether you like butter according to whether or not the flower reflects a bright yellow patch when held under your chin (it always does). This is an essential plant for a wildflower meadow, and is visited by various insects including flies, small moths and solitary bees. The small green and yellow leaf beetle Hydrothassa marginata eats both the flowers and seeds.
