Veronicastrum

Question from Gerry S

The garden that I work in has several veronicastrum virginicum 'lav..'. They are 4 years old and have reached a height of 1.5m. They are now dead - brown and black. I have only just started work on this garden and thought i would leave the seed for the birds. What do i do? Do i cut them back/ Have they finished their life altogether? I have 1.5metres of dead plant.....
