By Reading based MSGD garden designer Andrea Newill. A contemporary sloping garden around a generous level terrace within the sloping site, laid with sawn, contemporary beige limestone to tie in with the interior floor of the house.
A bespoke aluminium pergola is positioned in front of the house, planted with Wisteria and Vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’, which will climb over the structure to provide shade on the south facing terrace.
The client’s exiting stone table is positioned beneath this for family dining. A spherical water feature set within a brick built raised bed provides a focal point on the terrace and the sound of gently running water.
Further brick built raised beds with limestone coping help to soften change in level from the terrace to the lawn. Pleached hornbeams screen the terrace from the neighbouring property.
Naturalistic sun loving planting edges the terrace, including Heuchera, Origanum, Saliva ‘Caradonna’, Alliums, Knautia macedonica and Stipa gigantea with clipped box and Yew hedging for structure.
The north facing lower garden was designed to provide an attractive view from the house with a shady gravel seating area and focal point sculpture. Planting here includes Aruncus, Anemones, Aquilegia, Hydrangea quercifolia, Brunnera, Violas, and a feature Cornus kousa var Chinensis.
The existing play house at the bottom of the garden, was renovated and is now used by the client’s grandchildren when they visit.
Topiary Ligustrum half standard trees throughout the garden provide a connection between he different areas and echo box balls, the spherical water feature and the balls of purple and white allium and Hydrangea ‘Annabelle’ flowerheads.
