The clean up starts now! My garden is starting to get a bit out of control by now so its time to do some tidying of the borders and plan a little for winter and spring colour.

Jobs for Late Summer

  • Order bulbs in time for Autumn planting. Keep a look out for them in your garden centres and think about planting early summer bulbs such as Alliums - these will look great next year at a fraction of ready grown prices.
  • Keep dead-heading roses for continued flowers and cut back hardy geraniums to encourage a second, smaller flush of late flowers.
  • In the fruit garden pick late fruiting varieties and start pruning back other varieties. There are different opinions on pruning but I prune fruit trees when still in leaf to discourage silverleaf.
  • Cover ponds with netting to catch the first leaf fall.
  • Carry on cutting lawns and prepare for autumn lawncare such as aeration and top dressing.
  • But don't forget to sit back and enjoy the last few days of sunshine!
