Designed by Christine Wilkie. The owner of this small rear garden wanted to ensure year-round colour, fragrance, and interest.
The existing outbuildings were renovated providing a foil for climbing roses underplanted with Salvia sylvestris and Viola Klose.
In addition to the main patio a pathway leads along the side of the garden to a small circular seating area enabling the garden to be enjoyed from more than one vantage point. The circular terrace of sandstone setts was positioned to capture the best of the afternoon sun.
While the garden is broadly flat, it slopes slightly towards the rear boundary where raised timber sleeper beds with an informal built-in seat were created.
This garden was all about the plants. Curving paths cut into the lawn allow the plants to be enjoyed up close and personal.
Planting was cottage-style and informal with plants for scent suited to both sun and shade planted close to the house and pathways.
Containers planted with Phormiums add architectural interest to the outbuildings. Borders included mixed planting featuring a range of deciduous and evergreen shrubs to provide structure and backbone to the garden throughout the seasons.
