The RNIB Community Garden

Designed by Steve Dimmock & Paula Holland. The inspiration for the garden came from a personal, temporary experience of sight loss and to mark 150 years of RNIB in 2018.

The theme is ‘community’ with different routes leading into a central ‘community’ area of the garden, which allows the users to feel relaxed and find a place where people can come together, rather than feel the isolation often associated with the experience of sight loss.

The visitor will see an informal, flowing garden, designed to create a safe, accessible and tranquil space, with the darker bark of the Prunus serrula and shade plants contrasting with the lighter bark of the Betula utilis ‘Jacquemontii’ along with sun-loving, fragrant, pollinating and sensory textured planting, sculpture and water features.

The key features are the corten steel screens with windows and filters, allowing visitors to experience what it’s like to suffer some of the conditions leading to sight loss.
