The Savills and David Harber Garden

Sponsored by Savills, the global real estate services provider and award-winning artist and sculptor, David Harber. Designed by Andrew Duff MSGD.

Having successfully joined forces at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in 2018 to sponsor a Main Avenue garden which explored mankind’s impact through the ages, this is the second collaboration between Savills and David Harber. The brainchild of Andrew Duff, an esteemed member of the Society of Garden Designers, this year’s garden is a celebration of the environmental benefit and beauty of trees, plants and grass in urban spaces.

The design seeks to create a beautiful, sustainable woodland clearing in a city garden and is endorsed by the Environmental Change Institute, part of Oxford University. The breathtaking space will showcase a host of sustainable features, including bio-diverse large trees, a water purifying wetland area, a green wall and permeable surfaces.

Using predominantly native planting, Andrew Duff’s design features roughly 1000 perennial plants, under planting 18 mature trees provided by award-winning nursery, Majestic Trees. 30 square metres of woodland edge meadow turf will be interplanted with 10,000 bi-annual species, filling the remaining space. The colour scheme is predominantly a natural shade of green, with the introduction of soft whites and yellows to highlight key focal points. Meanwhile, acid yellow is used to represent sunlight, adding brightness to shady areas. Key plants featured will include Carpinus betulus, Alnus glutinosa, Iris foetidissima, Smyrnium olusatrum and Pilosella aurantiaca. As Managing Director of the Inchbald School of Design, Andrew is delighted to have recruited several of his students to help with the planting of the garden.

A key feature of the garden is a central pool of water which plays host to a sculptural installation, inspired by the surrounding woodland setting. From a shadow of ‘leaves’ which flutter on the surface of the water, soars a 3.5 metre shard that reaches high into the trees. Designed and created by David Harber, the sculptures are designed to play with light and create beautiful dappled patterns across the water.

This unique art work pays homage to the natural calm of its environment with its reflective, textured surface and defiant poise. It mimics and mirrors the trees surrounding it and draws the viewer’s eye to the centre of this living, breathing space - reminding us of the essence and power of nature, a notion very close to the ethos of David’s creations.
