By garden designer Stuart Charles Towner. Spirit of Cornwall - a garden inspired by the work of sculptor Barbara Hepworth with music by composer Leo Geyer commissioned by the Hepworth Estate and Tate St Ives.
The VTB Capital Garden brings together original music, ballet, garden design, sculpture and architecture to create a garden inspired by the work of Barbara Hepworth.
Rooted in her love of Cornwall, The VTB Capital Garden is the product of a unique collaboration of a team of creative minds not usually seen in garden design, bringing together garden design, musical composition, architecture, sculpture, production and dance.
The metal work that runs throughout the garden forming its backbone, is a physical manifestation of the music taken from the sound-wave pattern with its peak becoming the garden pavilion. Like the continuous thread of a piece of music, the metal work creates a connective thread between all the spaces, with the spines that run the length of the garden, becoming the Pavilion itself. A large dish forms the roof of the structure, acting as a pool with metal fins dropping down to form the side of the pavilion, creating an open yet enclosed space.
The garden also features two metal and Perspex sculptures by international sculptor SheilaVollmer, responding to the rhythms of the garden design, music and architecture. The sculptures are both inspired by the work of Barbara Hepworth and draw on work from her contemporaries such as Naum Gabo.
