The Unique Rare Chromosome Garden

Garden Designer Catherine Chenery and Horticulturalist Barbara Harfleet are working with Unique to help raise funds and awareness of these little understood but devastating disorders.

The Unique Rare Chromosome Garden

Barbara’s granddaughter, Rose, has been diagnosed with a Rare Chromosome Disorder and the family have faced an emotional battle dealing with the effects on Rose’s health and abilities. Rose is the only person in the world known with her particular disorder and she may in fact be unique. In creating the garden, the designers hope to support the charity and any other families going through the same struggle.

The Unique Rare Chromosome Garden

The design for the Unique garden takes inspiration from a DNA strand, a stylised version of which is also the charity’s logo. This is represented by a winding path, cut across by paving and hedging indicating the duplications and deletions of genes which cause rare chromosome disorders. The gravel pathways embody the rough journeys some children and their families have to make.

The tranquil meeting place in the centre of the garden provides a peaceful environment. Curved benches sheltered by delicate trees represent the comfort and support of a shared experience and the charity’s work in bringing families together. A mix of grasses with annual and perennial flowering plants in the charity’s colours (blue, yellow and white) create a light, uplifting feel which echoes the positive influence the charity has on families’ lives.

The Unique Rare Chromosome Garden

Individually, rare chromosome disorders are incredibly rare but collectively they are common. In fact, at least one in every 200 babies is born with a rare chromosome disorder, with many severely disabled.
