Wildlife garden in Surrey

By London garden designer Claudia de Yong. A completely neglected garden in Surrey was transformed with new paths, a large proportion of the garden was re-levelled and a wildlife pond was created.

The pond was located where originally there was a raised bed which allowed us to form a small waterfall back into the pond.

Wildlife garden

The rear of the garden was hidden by piles of pine cones and ivy, heavily shaded by trees. A walkway through the trees was created to lead round the back of the trees and so create a small glade under planted with various woodland species. We re-used the green material from clearing the garden and rotovated the planting areas using well rotted compost as the existing soil was so poor and lacking nutrients due to it's light sandy nature.

Access was limited by an existing pergola and the width of the path to the side of the property so we had to recycle as much as possible due to not be able to have a skip. The works were overseen daily by a large furry friend-client's Labrador who will no doubt be enjoying his new bath area!
