Hi, Pat,
I am in the foothills in LA County (La Canada/La Crescenta area). Have you considered Arbutus unedo? There are a few cultivars that stay rather small. I have 'Compacta' but 'Atlantic' is a good choice, too.

Welcome Pat! We are a UK based website so you might be better off to look for more local advice for your micro-climate in California? I know that there are many micro-climates which vary quite a bit across the region so local advice might be best.

Cheers Nicola

Hi, I live in Fountain Valley, Ca, Orange county, usa.
I am looking for a smallish pretty tree that will take afternoon sun. I am also looking at Rhaphiolepis, Majestic Beauty, and for any suggestions from you experts. Thanks
