Hi Yvonne, a Twitter follower has identified it as a perennial called Gillenia trifoliata. Click the link to learn more about it - it is hardy yes. Bisselingskaat says 'I grow it for cut flowers'

Gillenia trifoliata (Bowman's root) has been used in The Daily Telegraph for Chelsea Flower Show 2009.
