I forgot to address the rest of the question, the iris in the pond is iris pseudacorus, it is considered a weed here, you might want to grow the the Japanese iris instead. Both Iris can be cut down in Feb.

Hi, Amethyst.
Iris pseudacorus is a vigorous plant so it should grow back if the leaves are cut. Having said that, however, it is best to remove damaged or dead leaves in autumn before the first frost. They should be cut back completely and divided every two years.

Hi, Martin,
The growth your plant had put on in a month's time is a testament to how vigorous I. psedacorus is. You can divide now and if you have an account with Shoot, the site has a great video/instruction page on how to do this (just make sure you have this plant in your 'Plants I Have' list. To be honest, I think a month after planting is a bit soon to divide. Also, given how quickly this plant grow, making it too, too happy will mean it can overrun/outgrow your pond quickly.

Iris pseudacorus

Question from martin

In forum: Aquatics and ponds

Hi guys i am really new to plants etc. i planted this iris in august. At that time the roots were small and the container seemed ample. However as you can see the roots are now running wild and growth seemed to have slowed considerably. I have been told i should divide them to increase numbers and encourage growth. please advise and if i should divide please tell me how to go about that.
Many Thanks
