I agree with Carol that the first one looks like Buddleia but I think the second one may be Honesty - Lunaria annua.

Hi Rachel, some suggestions on our social media are:
"Looks like a a purple variety of Honesty (Lunaria annua)"

That is Lunaria annua (Honesty). Pretty plant that will self seed very happily. The seed pods can be cut & dried for decorations.

Looks a bit like 'Honesty' Lunaria annua. Usually flower is a little darker but leaf looks right.Sorry just saw height...possibly too small for our guess...see what you think

I think they are both lunaria annua, the 2nd pic, has not got its true leaves yet, compare when they get the next set of leaves.

Lunaria annua is a biennial, which means it seeds itself one year, comes up the next and blooms the next year, so the ones that have finished blooming need to spread their seeds if you want some flowers in 2015, the green ones will bloom in 2014 and the cycle will be repeated, this is true of foxgloves too, I hope that makes it clear.

HI, Winston,
Lunaria is, as defined by the RHS, an annual or biennial, sometimes completing its lifecycle in one year, other times, as Elaine correctly stated, in two as a biennial.

It is definitely a biennial, it blooms one year drops its seed, grows the second year and blooms the following year, very much like a foxglove.
Question from
In forum: Lunaria annua
I am querying the life cycle of the plant "Honesty" is it biennial or annual, my google search states that the plant life cycle is biennial, the Shoot's site state annual, I am confused

Possibly Honesty, Lunaria annua
It’s a biannual and will flower in the second year. Seeds around the garden and is loved by bees
