Hi there, I will give you a few ideas on a few small trees and shrubs that I love and would consider about using in that situation.
Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'Mariesii', a gorgeous tiered deciduous shrub with white flowers and autumn colour foliage.
Cornus controversa 'Variegata', beautiful tiered variegated small tree with white flowers.
Amelanchier lamarckii, a really lovely small deciduous tree that will have all year round interest with small star-shaped flowers, red-purple berries and fiery autumn colour leaves.
Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula', a fabulous small weeping ornamental pear with silvery willow like deciduous foliage, you can keep reducing the height of it when required quite happily.
Magnolia x soulangeana, again can be kept to size or most of the lovely deciduous varieties of Magnolias really.
Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile', highly scented deciduous shrub, stems will hang down with the weight of the white flowers.
Wiegela florida 'Variegata' lovely delicate variegated deciduous shrub with pink tubular flowers, will arch with weight of leaves and flowers.
Lonicera fragrantissima again deciduous shrub with arching branches, scented white flowers in winter.
All the above plants will cope with a clay soil.
There's a few for you to look up and enjoy.
