Unidentifiable shrub

Question from Fiona kirby

In forum: Identify a plant

Please can someone help identify this tree/large shrub. It is in full flower now, and is absolutely beautiful but we are at a loss to know it’s name. The client has had it many years and it does give it a hard cut back sometimes by a metre or more after flowering. The flowers don’t have a scent. We’ve been through many books but are stumped. Thank you for your help.

Mystery Shrub

Comment from Andrew

In forum: Identify a plant

I was given this plant some years ago as a rooted offset from a plant growing next to a stream - a dense thicket of arching stems up to two metres. I was told it was a type of willow. Planted it in an unsuitable position and it languished for some years. Moved it last year to a wetter spot and it put on much more growth though only a single stem. Then, very early this spring a pink bud appeared which opened to a flower as pictured (somewhat the worse for wear) in April. Appears to me to be a Prunus - certainly not a willow.

This plant which appears to me somewhere between a grass and a reed. It has started to invade a border bed. I have seen it locally invade acres of bluebell wood in Leicestershire. It can be tenacious and rugged. I`m curious to find out if its a native plant or imported

One suggestion is Oncostema, but that looks pretty rare for the UK

identify plant and prune it properly

Question from Eileen Christie

In forum: Identify a plant

I suspect this is just a shrub that has not been pruned for 20 years and is now tree size (5 metres-ish) with multiple stems. Round, red, almost translucent berries in autumn which stay all winter if the birds don't scoff them. They are like little bunches of redcurrants. Actually it looks rather like a redcurrant, now I come to think of it.

It needs a proper pruning, but I'd like to figure out what it is first. Thanks in advance
