Question from
I have to widen the surround of a long, narrow pond near a mature silver birch tree (betula utilis jaquemontii). The roots of the silverbirch seem to have found their way round the original pond, and some go right up to the edge where I have to work, at one point this is only about a metre from the tree.
If I cut some of the small (say, less than 15mm diameter) roots to make space for the widened foundation, will it seriously affect the tree, or will it just sprout new roots?
Second question:
I have tried digging carefully round the roots, removing soil and lowering the roots. Will the tree tolerate this treatment?

Can anyone help us please?
We are seriously looking to change one of our main borders from herbaceous perennials to a shrub border with a main colour theme of white, whether in flower or in variegated foliage. This takes me out of an area of which I am modestly comfortable to an unknown!
I'm wondering if any member would care to give us their suggestions and as we are going to buy the shrubs, seems logical if we could buy them from a member as well?
I have attached more information on soil type, position, our first stab at a list and a photo of the border
Thanks for reading.

Hi, have a magnolia that I would like to take cuttings of to grow on, I'm new to this so help is needed. I have a non electric propagator along with cutting gel and compost, what I need to know is how to take the cuttings and then how to grow on. Do I keep them indoors or outside during the day, these sort of questions.
Thanks Mark

Could anyone offer advice on suitable evergreen clear stem trees that offer privacy of at least 3.5 meters to be planted along the property boundary. My garden is drenched in sunshine all day long.
I live in a coastal area with clay soil.
I had thought Ligustrum Japonicum but have been told they don’t look very attractive.
I do like the look of olive trees but they are very expensive when brought at a ready height of 2meters plus!
I wouldn’t mind mixing a few trees to give interest.
Ideally I would like to be able to maintain a floral bed underneath.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated

Originally thought this was a blue spruce but now I'm not sure. I need to identify this tree as it sits within 10 meters of the main house, therefore need to estimate a mature height to the tree.

I am looking for privacy trees, as I have some flats overlooking my back garden.
I have narrowed the trees I want to either 1) Thuja Plicata Atrovirens or 2) Thuja Plicata Martin, but am confused on which of these to go for. I would like answers to my questions below to decide.
Questions:
1) Which of these is the quickest growing?
2) What is the maximum height each of these trees can reach?
3) Keen to avoid cleaning leaves and trees waste. Do shred bark or cones?
4) How many trees would I need to plant to cover 17m?
I would greatly appreciate some advice.

My daughter has bought a weeping cherry - prunus subhirtella pendula for her garden. She wants to grow it in a large container beneath a sturdy wooden pergola with the branches trailing down over the top of the pergola. It’s approx 10 ft in height. The garden centre she bought it from have said that it won’t grow too much taller than its current height in the next 5 - 10 years and will be fine in a container provided it’s kept watered. I’m unsure whether it will be ok in a container or it should be planted in the ground. Any suggestions welcome.

Hello,
I am considering buying some Cupressus 'Totem Pole'. I know they have the potential to grow quite tall and I know they are slow growing. However, is it possible to prune them to keep them at a desired height?
Question from
How and when best time to take cuttings of Physocarpus Opulifolius Diabolo are they softwood or hardwood cuttings
Question from
These are in a row, 5 ft apart in a flower bed. 10 ft high. The branches overhang a joint fence. How do I prune them to prevent them getting taller/wider ? Thank you.
