Compacted clay soil

Comment from Margie Johnston

I live in Amersham in the Chilterns, and am seeking help as to how I can lighten the very heavy clay soil in my garden. Adding tons to rotted compost has done little good. I need to take a pickaxe to dig a hole! Any tips?

Question from Jaci

I would love to hear from members who are container gardening on the Costa Blanca in Spain about what flowering plants have been successful for them. We have brought our severely disabled son to live here for the benefit of his health. We have just bought a village house with a courtyard and rooftop solarium. I love flowers but no time for lots of gardening with my care commitments. All helpful comments and suggestions would be welcome, especially regarding flowering plants with fragrance.

Winter jasmine

Question from Dr A Meadows

I have a winter jasmine that has been in a pot on a sunny patio for about 7 years and the past year on a sheltered north facing patio. I would like to plant in on my east facing wall so it act as a climber against my wooden face but will be quite exposed. Do you think this is a wise decision?

Japanese Laurel (Aucuba Variegata)

Question from Phil Mepham

I bought this plant for the benefit of the flower and berry combination but understand there has to be a 'male' clone nearby for that to happen. Trouble is, I don't know - and cant find - what something suitable would be! Any clues please? Thanks

How to add generic plants?

Comment from Marjanne

I have a lot of self sown aquilegias as well as some specials, my query is how to add the generic aquilegia vulgaris to my plant list without having to plow through the 150 named varieties only to find I've missed it? Or is it just a question of 'adding' a plant to shoots plant data base?
