Just how brutal can I be with pruning. This magnificent plant has absolutely taken over my fences (and my neighbours trees) this year. Can I cut back REALLY hard?

Prune it well back ( i.e. three or four feet further back than you want it) in the depths of Winter to prevent sap bleed! Wait until it has finished its display of colour.
