Hi, Matthew,
Bare root are typically only available in autumn or winter and should be planted straight away while still dormant, as long as the soil is not frozen.
Container grown trees/shrubs are best planted in autumn/early winter. Next best time is spring. Having said that, they can be planted at any time but will require more aftercare if planted in summer, for instance, as they will most likely need for water for establishing roots, etc.
