can this variety of tree be planted in a large flower pot??

Hi, John,
Yes, it can, with some ongoing maintenance on your part. Select a tree with a dwarf rootstock - you should be able to find this at larger nurseries that concentrate on fruit trees. Once selected, gradually pot up plant up over the next few years until you have reached the largest container desired. Keep the plants height in check with regular pruning at the recommended time of year (see the plant page for 'Opal' here on Shoot for correct pruning time/techniques) and you will need to root prune the tree every 3 years or so once it is in its final, permanent container. It will also need regular feeding during the growing season as well as regular watering.
