Hi Muriel.. that's a toughy.. I see the leaves are serrated. Is it evergreen or deciduous? Best wishes, Judi.. :-)

Possibly a ZELKOVA serrata.
The leaves are about 5in long . The tree grows to around 100 feet.

I think the tree is deciduous but my friend is not entirely certain. It is also possible that this is an overgrown shrub that just has never been pruned. I am inclining towards a Winged Elm tree at the moment, but am still not entirely sure. Here are a few more photos if anyone has a better idea.

They both have similar leaves. What size are the leaves you have?
The Elm has leaves that are 1½ to 3½ inches long,

I now have some pictures of this tree in flower - do these help with identification? Any ideas gratefully received!

You haven't said how long the leaves are, if they are around 5 inches
( The Elm has a smaller leaf) it looks as if it is Zelkova. Nice photo . where is this tree growing? ( Don't say in the garden ;-)
