I bought this clematis some years ago and as the label said it was a type 3 have been pruning it every year and got no flowers! This spring I left it to it's own devices and it is flowering now. Suspect it must be a montana but not sure which one. (The cleavers are due to be harvested soon for their medicinal properties or fed to the chickens!) Thanks

It is a montana, if so you prune it right after it finishes blooming, but don't cut it down to the ground, just thin it out and head it back, it balks when cut right to the ground and may even die.

Thanks Elaine. I'll certainly be fairly gentle with it. It is looking really pretty climbing into a cherry tree.
