Thoroughly enjoyed a visit to the lovely Garden at Hidcote in Gloucestershire a couple of days ago & hoped someone would be able to identify this plant for me. The foliage was about 12 - 18 ins high & the white flowers were fragrant, held above the heart shaped leaves & reached a height of about 2 ft.
I would love to plant this in a small perfumed border I'm planning but as it was mostly in dappled shade at Hidcote I suspect it needs more shade than it will get there but there's always another spot!!
Thanks
Christine

Looks a bit like 'Honesty' Lunaria annua. Usually flower is a little darker but leaf looks right.Sorry just saw height...possibly too small for our guess...see what you think

The leaves look like lunaria, but it does not have the spike of the flower, it is in the cress family, I wonder if it is pachyphragma?

Many thanks for you thoughts. Think the pachyphragma is the closest but not sure about the scent aspect. According to the details here on Shoot it has an unpleasant perfume - I thought it smelt nice but then perhaps my sense of smell is a bit odd!!

Hi Christine,
It is an "Honesty", but a perennial one; Lunaria rediviva. You can actually look it up on Shoot, they have it in their plant profiles. If you google it, RHS will give you info on it too. The perennial one is scented rather like "Night Scented Stocks".
Best wishes,
Samantha Jane

Yes Samantha, that is it!! The good news is that it will probably be OK in the perfumed border where I want to plant it.
Many thanks everyone.
