Hello. I'm looking for upright habit and manageable size (about 1m high) variety of Phormium to plant on the 60cm wide border along the fence to accompany bamboos on the other side. It is confusing as different websites seems to be giving different spread/height information about the same Phormium varieties. Would be grateful if someone could advice which Phormium suits best for this.

Thanks.

Phormium

Hello Gita

I think a mix of red and yellow (Phormium Jester) and yellow (Yellow Wave) would be perfect, they are hardy and can make a great contrast with bamboos.

Normally I'd recommend cordylines too (some nice red varieties) but mine suffered unusually in the bad winter a couple of years ago (phormiums survived).

Or some very small Trachycarpus Wagneranius palms as I call them, they survived too and are wind and frost tolerant (supposedly to-19c which we've never had here in mid England.....)
