I have a couple of north facing banks (15 square metres and 24 square metres) and would like some ideas for covering it with plants. I could put grass there but wonder if you can come up with something a bit different. The ground is chalky and Ivy grows all over the place very easily.

How about....
Vinca Minor or Major (perriwinkle), Pachysandra terminalis, Epimediums, Euphorbia Robbiae, Alchemilla Mollis, Brunnera and some perennial geraniums such as macrorrhizum.

That's a great list by Clockhouse Nursery - a couple of those I'll add to my list :)

I would also add some ferns such as: Dryopteris erythrosora or Osmunda regalis 'Purpurascens'.

You could add ornamental grasses, such as the Luzula’s, Luzula sylvatica 'Hohe Tatra', Luzula sylvatica 'Marginata' & Luzula sylvatica 'Taggart's Cream' (all evergreen). And for colour, Meconopsis cambrica, the Welsh poppy.
