Despite protecting this plant over its first winter with fleece, on removing the fleece in Spring, the plant appears to be completely dead. Another Cistus, bought at the same time, but in another bed, is fine. This also had the same fleece protection, but was considered a less hardy variety. Did I make a mistake by covering it with fleece?

Being a Mediterranean plant, it requires very good drainage and protection from cold winds, adding gravel to a hot site will help. Winter wet is responsible for more deaths.
