This appears all over my garden - I don't know what it is, Has red and black seed pods which open to give yellow flowers in the summer

That's one of the varieties of Hypericum (St John's Wort)
If you cut it back hard after flowering, before the fruits change from red to black, you won't have quite so much in future years. Or if you don't like it, dig it out.

We had a whole bed of these when we moved in 12 years ago and have regularly dug in an attempt to reduce the spread but shoots still appear in other places. They must have very strong wide spreading roots! Meantime, they do produce such pretty flowers/berries.
