We moved to a new house in December 2016 and the previous owners had many container plants, some of which they left. One is a beautiful dark purple Magnolia in a pot almost 2ft high by 2ft wide at the top which gave a lovely display. However, also in the pot was an ivy which seemed to be well established, irises and arum lilies. We have tried to dig out the ivy as much as possible but it had really taken hold and is now growing again. We would like to empty the pot to remove the ivy and then refill with fresh soil and return the Magnolia but don’t want to harm the Magnolia. When would be the best time to do this and is the Magnolia likely to survive. Any help would be appreciated.

Might it be easier to kill the ivy with some systemic weedkiller - the kind you paint onto the leaves of the ivy and it gets taken down into the roots to kill just the one plant?

Thank you, that sounds like a good idea.

Ivy is difficult to kill with weed killer due to waxy leaf. Young leaves are less waxy - so cut the ivy to soil level - wait for fresh growth and the put weedkiller on the young leaves.
You may need to do this a couple of times. Note: please give the weed killer 5-6 weeks to act - as I know people think spraying every week is right - don't be fooled by tv adverts - good weedkiller that kills down to the roots takes time
