Hello, trying to help an elderly neighbour clear his garden. These large leaved waxy ground plants have spread everywhere. They have 1 inch diameter woody roots and appear to be linked to each other on a "chain" root which runs underneath the whole patio. Can anyone suggest what they are please, and how we can kill them permanently? We can't dig up the whole patio as part is concrete. And even digging down a foot doesn't eradicate the roots.

What are these and how do I get rid of them?

Can you get a closer picture of the plants? Just one? and the root system? They look hairy rather than waxy in this picture, but I can't place what you describe...
